Desperation
© Emma Lee Downs
A poem that uses imagery to express the feeling of desperation.
It’s like black dragons hording men’s desires,
Tiger’s Inom glinting in a stone room, Where the dead once stood,
Like willows weeping for the sunlight, When all the sun can give them is the moon,
Like lavenders at the feet of a tomb where my ancestors lie; Where my body someday will lie,
Like a white unicorn running through endless flames,
Silver maples bent over from thirst,
Like forget-me-nots left untouched, In the winding hallways and deep staircases of the catacombs,
Like a daffodil crushed by careless feet, Left for revenging wolves,
Like the ones that eat at society’s morals, Thorn-tipped roses at the heads of those we once loved.
